Summer Fitness Tips
Bob Greene, Oprah's fitness guru, has a special summer fitness plan for you:
1. Start with walking. Walking is a great cardiovascular exercise that is easy on your body and you can do it anywhere, anytime! Aim for 20-30 minutes of walking and gradually work up to 45 minutes or even 60 minutes. Once you feel comfortable with an easy walk, try hiking or walking on an incline for maximum calorie burn. Don't forget to keep good posture: chin up, shoulders back, and swing arms at 90 degrees.
2. Drink Water. Your body needs a minimum of 10 eight-ounce glasses of water daily during the summer months. In addition, always hydrate properly before, after, and during exercise. Bob says that often times when we reach for food, our body is actually in need of water instead. If you drink a full glass of water before each meal, you will be less prone to overeating.
3. Keep Metabolism High. Don't drastically change your diet all at once or you risk a drastic decrease in your metabolism. A slower metabolism means slower weight loss results, less energy, and a lack in motivation. Replace your current calorie count with more healthful choices, keeping the same number of calories in your diet. This will allow your metabolism to increase in order to adjust to your new cardiovascular exercise. After about 2 months, gradually change your eating habits to encourage better weight loss results.
4. Eat Breakfast. You've heard it before, and it's true... breakfast is the most important meal! Try to always eat within 30 minutes of waking up to boost your metabolism. Other good eating habits to adopt are: not eating within 2 hours of bedtime; reducing portion sizes; and eating every 4 hours. Keep track of those calories to make sure that your mini meals aren't adding up to more calories than you need.
Happy summer and enjoy being healthy!
