The inspiration for this virtual event came from being the granddaughter of a celebrity chef – and an inspiration to all. My grandmother, Phila Hach, was truly an inspiration and when I was thinking of a way to keep us all connected during this time, I thought of her. Honestly, I think her mission in life was to bring people together, which she did through food and in the kitchen. I have never met anyone that has shown so much love and compassion to every single person that she meets – no matter what they did or where they come from. She brought these people together through food and that is what I wanted to do through this cooking competition. Everyone has different flavor profiles, different cooking styles, and right now, everyone has something different in their pantry. It was so much fun to see all your creations!
I hope you enjoy this eCookbook, compiled from all your creations.
There is a really fun video about my grandmother. If you Google Phila Hach NPR, you'll ...

During this quarantine, I have decided to take on a couple new hobbies! I did not grow up in a handy family whatsoever and before this year, I could barely assemble Ikea furniture. For some reason though, I decided to take on the task of designing and building a desk from scratch. I found a software called Sketchup after binge watching some HGTV and fell in love. You can design just about anything from desks to houses.
Just to let you know, I am not an expert at all and am still learning. I love the farmhouse aesthetic, so I had a design in my head and decided to attempt to create it on Sketchup.
Like I said, I am definitely not an expert as this took me hours to make and it still isn’t perfect. I actually still have yet to do the drawers as I decided to not attach them to the desk in case I wanted to switch sides. After I had this design worked up, I made my way to a lumber store in downtown Salt Lake called MacBeath Hardwood. I knew I wanted walnut as the top, but I almos ...

Thank you. From the bottom of our hearts, we are so grateful for everything you have done during this time and what you will continue to do. When I Googled the word 'essential', it read, “absolutely necessary; extremely important”. What you are doing is just that. Your willingness to get up every day and serve, whether that be in hospitals, patrolling the streets, delivering packages, or in our grocery stores and warehouses, you are risking your health so that we can stay safe and happy. Despite the masks that you are wearing and hours and hours of lost sleep behind your eyes, you are still able to show that you are smiling and show your kindness.
I was talking to a friend who is an intensive-care nurse in New York, the epicenter of the COVID crisis, and she sent me a message that reads the following:
Being an intensive-care nurse in the epicenter of the COVID crisis means facing the unknown, surrounded by fear, anxiety, risks, wins, and losses. We are left wi ...

I have been around food my whole life. My grandmother, Phila Hach, or as I liked to call her – Phifee, who is known for creating Cracker Barrel’s first cookbook, the World’s Fair’s first cookbook and many others was the sole reason I fell in love with cooking. Even though she is not with us anymore, I know I can pick up any of her 17 published cookbooks and start creating one of her masterpieces. Phifee loved to entertain and she used her passion of food to bring people together that otherwise would not. My brothers and I would just sit on the counter trying to make the perfect sauce while Phifee created new dishes. It is funny to think about how well you can get to know someone just by spending time with them in the kitchen. Are they messy? Do they use a measuring cup? Do they use a whisk or their hands? In my opinion, you can be a chef, but if you don’t get your hands dirty, then you are not a creator. My grandmother created art, the! ...
